CHP Updates: Bantay Iru 143 Campaign KKKR: Kaalman para sa Kaligtasan Kontra Rabies Purok to Purok H

Following Bantay Iru 143 Campaign's 3B's Kontra Rabies: "Bakuna kay Bantay para sa ligtas na Barangay" mass dog vaccination last October 2014, yet another successful program was launched by Team Sicpao as part of its advocacy for responsible pet ownership.

A 2-day purok-to-purok health teaching was done, entitled “Kaalaman para sa Kaligtasan Kontra Rabies (KKKR)”. Each day of the said event had different target populations. On the first day, April 8, 2015, the health teaching was given to 16 barangay officals and purok leaders at the DCM Gymnasium. On the following day, the same health teaching was given at different sites for the residents from different puroks of Barangay DCM. A total of 191 residents attended the said purok-to-purok health teaching at 4 different locations, namely Puroks 3, 6, 5 and DCM gymnasium. The said health teachings included information on rabies, its mode of transmission, signs and symptoms, wound management, and changing misconceptions about rabies and traditional home remedies, as well as responsibilities of pet owners and penalties (RA 9482). A pre-test and post-test was given before and after every health teaching session. Leaflets and videos were also used as part of the lecture.

Project head and key speaker for the said health teachings, Edelyn Arguelles, believes that this massive information dissemination is an essential part of their campaign for responsible pet ownership. She adds, “we have already implemented our mass dog vaccination, which is one of the major interventions in our plan, however, it is much more important that we strengthen our campaign with health teaching, after all, what good is an intervention if the people will be left unaware of its importance?” The team now aims to strengthen its campaign further by pushing for an annual mass dog vaccination, in partnership with the Municipal Agriculture Office, hopefully by October 2015.
