CHP Updates: 2+1 Kontra Alta Presyon Mass BP Taking

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of morbidity worldwide and the complications associated with uncontrolled hypertension are also the leading causes of mortality around the world. Barangay Daniel C. Mantos is no exception to this. According to secondary data, hypertension ranks first in the annual morbidity disease report of 2013 in Barangay DCM. During the team’s data collection, we were able to note that 24.2% of households have at least one member with hypertension. With these cues, a comprehensive health plan was then formulated, aimed at diagnosing hypertension in individuals with elevated blood pressure and improving compliance with their anti-hypertensive treatment.

In line with this plan, the team came up with 2+1 Kontra Alta Presyon, a 3-day mass blood-pressure taking aimed at identifying individuals with elevated blood pressure, diagnosing them with hypertension and providing Hypertension Medi-cards to be used to claim their monthly maintenance medications from the RHU, free of charges.

The project leaders met with Mahayag’s Muncipal Health Officer, Dr. Wilson Lumapas for the approval for use of the Hypertension Medicards. After approval, the team started production of said cards to be distributed on the last day of the 2+1 Kontra Alta Presyon program.

Why is it called 2+1?

The first 2 days of the program was aimed at identifying individuals with elevated blood pressure, assessing them using the NCD high-risk assessment form patterned from the Department of Health, and providing them with health teachings regarding hypertension.

The last day of the program (+1day) was focused on diagnosing the identified individuals with hypertension.

Out of 239 who attended the event, 93 were identified to have elevated blood pressure. Out of that 93, Team Sicpao, with the help of Dr. Jerald Ramos and Dr. Ruzenda Bellen-Ramos, was able to diagnose 29 new cases of hypertension. The other 64 individuals were already known hypertensives. All these 93 individuals were given Hypertensive Medicards which they can use to avail of free monthly maintenance medication at the Mahayag RHU.

The team is optimistic that these first few steps would pave the way for more projects and interventions that are all aimed for better control of hypertension in Barangay DCM.
