CHP Update: Barangay DCM WACS

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, for a solid waste management planning to be successful, one must have a good analysis of the current situation to provide a firm basis for decisions. The RA 9003, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act requires local government units to prepare as 10-year SWM plan, in which part of this is to conduct a waste analysis and characterization study (WACS). A WACS identifies the constituent materials by volume, percentage in weight or its volumetric equivalent, material type and source generation.

Last April 19, 2015 Team Sicpao conducted a waste analysis and characterization study or WACS in Barangay Daniel C. Mantos. A representative sample of 30 households representing the different income ranges participated in the WACS day. Each household was given a set of labeled plastic bags corresponding to types of solid waste that they will produce for 3 days. They were also taught to properly segregate their trash. On the day of the WACS, the team was able to weigh, characterize and sort the household’s trash and recorded their findings.

According to project leader Elshad Sali, a WACS is essential in planning a Solid Waste Management program. With the WACS results, the team can come up with appropriate future interventions suitable to the waste that the community can generate.
